The plants are quick growing, very early maturing, and resistant to bolting. It is at its best when grown in spring and summer as the exposed mature beetroot does not enjoy hard frosts. It is ideal for early sowings in cold frames and for successional sowing outside for a prolonged cropping period. Egyptian Beetroot has rapid early season growth and, as most of the root forms above the ground, the mature beet can be pulled rather than dug in 50 to 60 days. The plants are shorter than conventional beet relatives and the leaves are a beautiful blend of emerald green and crimson/burgundy. It is particularly good when eaten raw, for instance when grated in salads. In Egypt, the first sugar beet factory was established in 1982. Sugarbeet is cultivated in the countries of the temperate belt (45 to 59 NL). Its interior has no fibrous ‘strings’ and its sweet flesh is a deep crimson/burgundy. In France it is better known as Betterave ‘Rouge Noir Plate d’Egypte’.Įgyptian Beetroot produces smooth-skinned roots, often heart-shaped, wider than tall, with a deep red, tender and flavoursome flesh. In 1885, Vilmorin said “An exceedingly early variety and certainly the best of the early kitchen-garden kinds”. Vitamins and Minerals Beetroots are a great source of many essential vitamins and minerals. Originating in Egypt, (never would have guessed that!), it was first described in the early 1800’s and was common in seed catalogues from 1870. Beets are high in fiber but also have FODMAPs, which can cause digestive problems in some people. This beetroot is known by a number of variations on the name: The ‘Egyptian Flat Rooted Beetroot’, ‘Egyptian Beetroot’ or even, would you believe, The ‘Egyptian Turnip Rooted Beetroot’! Since beets are generally thought of as a European crop, the name continues to pique peoples curiosity which is probably why it was named that.
